Connemara Therapeutic Riding is a part time community service operating at Errislannan Manor, providing children and adults with disability, with therapeutic riding sessions. Therapeutic Riding uses equine based learning techniques together with knowledge of disability to develop learning and therapeutic interventions for people with a variety of physical, cognitive, emotional and developmental disabilities. It has been described ‘as physiotherapy on horseback’.
The service has been operating for nearly a year and participants, their families and the committee have seen the huge benefits of Therapeutic Riding over this period. It has benefited both children and adults with a range of conditions including Autism, Epilepsy, Down’s syndrome, acquired brain injury, learning disabilities, sensory impairments and Cerebral Palsy.
The committee have seen first-hand that TR has assisted the rider by improving balance and co-ordination, greatly assisted with emotional control, self-confidence and self-esteem. The service has obtained some funding from FORUM Connemara, Connemara’s community development company, to subsidise the sessions for disadvantaged families and is otherwise dependent on donation and fundraising.
